I think it’s time to go ahead and kill this rumor…
We all got excited when first-person shooter Killing Floor 2 launched on Steam Early Access and developer Tripwire Interactive announced a Linux and SteamOS version.
If they release it on Linux, why not release Killing Floor 2 for Mac, especially as the platform is bigger? Or so I thought. When I finally got a hold of them, they said:
- About This Game In KILLING FLOOR 2, players descend into continental Europe where the outbreak caused by Horzine Biotech’s failed experiment has quickly spread and gained unstoppable momentum, essentially paralyzing the European Union— Just one month after the events in the original KILLING FLOOR, the specimen clones are everywhere and civilization is in disarray; communications have.
- Buy Killing Floor 2 as a Steam Key. In KILLING FLOOR 2 players descend into continental Europe where the outbreak caused by Horzine Biotech’s failed experiment has quickly spread and gained unstoppable momentum, essentially paralyzing the European Union— Just one month after the conclusion of the events in the original KILLING FLOOR, the specimen clones are everywhere and civilization is.

@MacGamerHQ We will look at a mac version of #KillingFloor2 in the future, but are not actively working on one now.
Killing Floor is a co-op survival horror FPS game. Remake of the UT2004 modification and available on Steam platform.

Since, the Linux version was outsourced to Knockout Games and later put entirely on hold. When asked about the Linux version on Steam, Tripwire said:
It is not something actively in development at this time, but our engine team continues to evaluate it as a potential task weighed against the rest of their workload.
So there you have it. If they’re shelving a port they publicly announced, it’s safe to assume a MacOS version is virtually impossible now.

But all is not lost…
Killing Floor 2 got me really excited for a while there. This is a 6-player co-op zombie shooter with over 30,000 very positive reviews on Steam. It even got a new 12-player Versus Survival mode which looks like a lot of fun…
I can’t really blame Tripwire. They never said they were working on a MacOS version and still took the time to get back to me to confirm their position.

But more importantly, you have solid alternatives. For starters, you can check out Valve’s awesome Left 4 Dead 2, one of my favorite FPS games for Mac. It too has co-op (albeit 4-players only) and hundreds of zombies to kill.
There’s also the enhanced Dying Light: The Following, a great game with zombies to kill and cross-platform multiplayer. Finally, if you’re more into the zombies themselves than the shooting, you can try the excellent The Walking Dead from Telltale Games.
